Bang under the PVNT Expressway at Retibowli, at Rayan function hall (Pillar No.47) a quintal of rice is cooked that serves 800 persons.

Syed Naseer, who runs an Irani hotel, is the brainchild behind the idea. Initially he was sceptical but egged on by friends they started providing food for the last four days and decided to continue at least for a month till normalcy returns and smaller denominations are available in the market.

Much to their surprise, people from all walks of life have started pitching in by way of contributions. Naseer says, “Recently, a lady came in a BMW with a bag of rice, likewise several people give essentials such as rice, tamarind and butter milk.”

The news of the youth doing a good deed has spread by word of mouth and people even from far flung areas have been dropping by and donating essentials.

“I still regret that a girl died of starvation in the city two years ago. Given the current scenario, we can at least in our individual capacity avert such deaths,” said the businessman who did not want to be named.

Naseer said that the daily expenditure comes to Rs 12,000 and were unsure how they would meet the expense but are pleasantly surprised that people are coming forward to help with essential commodities including rice, tamarind and dal.

Md Akram, the owner of Rayan function hall who is providing space and utilities for the activity felt that helping the needy would please God and this is the time that people help each other.

“Even though all the bookings for marriages in this function hall were cancelled after the demonetisation, we believe that God has given us an opportunity to serve the needy,” he quipped.
