Puttaparthi: Saturday’s ghastly train mishap claimed the life of a 28-year-old youth, who was not a passenger on the ill-fated bogie but died on seeing the intensity of the gruesome damage.

Basavaraju, who saw the burnt Three-Tier AC compartment of the Bangalore- Nanded Express, was so shaken that he jumped under the wheels of the Bangalore-bound Prashanti Express at the Prashanti Nilayam Railway station here on Sunday.

Basavaraju was working as an SGT teacher at MPUP school in Madinepalli of Chilamattur mandal in the district. He was driven to suicide as he was unable to come to terms with the ghastly tragedy. He is survived by his mother and sister. While his father Basavappa, a postal employee died in 1996, his sister Sai Leela works in the Guntakal municipality.

However, it was not known whether any of the dead passengers was related to Basavaraju or whether he was overcome by emotion on seeing the ghastly sight. Police have filed a case. Railway and police officials are investigating the case from various angles.
