Hyderabad: In a tragic incident on Monday, a 22-year-old engineering student sustained 90-per cent burns after he was allegedly set on fire by fellow students at Himayath Sagar in Moinabad mandal under Ranga Reddy district on Monday. He is battling for his life at Osmania General Hospital.


According to police, Shiva Mahesh Kumar, a B Tech first year student of Abhinav Hi-tech College of Engineering in Moinabad in Himayath Sagar area was allegedly set on fire in front of the college. The exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained, the police said


“His friends suspect that the fellow students set Mahesh on fire, who they earlier called and asked him to meet them near the college in the morning,” the police said. While some of the students who had been close to Mahesh claimed that he might have taken the step after being denied hall ticket for the semester exams of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU).


Shiva Mahesh who received more than 90 per cent burns was immediately shifted to Osmania hospital.According to the police, all angles are being investigated. The police have seized the victim’s cell phone and are acquiring all call data record.


They did not rule out love angle and suicide attempt in the case. Shiva who hails from Bhootpur in Mahbubnagar district initially joined Vignan Jyothi College but later moved to Abhinav College without his parents’ consent.
