A man who was arrested on charges of abetting suicide of his wife was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by Judge of Mahila Court A. Varaprasada Rao on Wednesday.


The man, Nalla Appalaraju of Bhanojithota married G. Lavanya in 2006. But after the birth of two daughters, Appalaraju and his parents started harassing her for additional dowry. Lavanya, unable to bear the continuous harassment committed suicide on April 28, 2011. She was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to the burns after fighting for life for over a month.


Lavanya’s mother lodged a complaint with the Gajuwaka police who registered a case under Section 302 and 498A of IPC. Lavanya’s dying declaration was recorded by the Third metropolitan magistrate of Gajuwaka G. Ramakrishna.


Mahila court judge A. Varaprasada Rao pronounced the judgment convicting the accused to three years rigorous imprisonment for harassing the victim for dowry and 10 years rigorous imprisonment for abetting suicide.
