PASSPORT SCAM

Hyderabad: A thorough investigation into the case of passport issuance to illegal immigrants from the neighbouring countries revealed that the scam being run by the city police personnel. Involvement of four policemen has been unravelled, while two of them were arrested.

The arrest of Mohammed Nasir, alleged sympathiser of banned organisation Harkat-ul-Jihadi-al-Islami, has become an eye-opener for the Hyderabad city police to learn the laxities present in Passport Verification. The accused police personnel identified in the scam were directly helping the illegal immigrants get the Indian passport. The accused policemen were habituated to take bribe and help illegal immigrants in getting various clearances.

The primary investigations in the arrest of four foreign nationals and two city residents had revealed that an assistant sub-inspector of police and a police constable from South Zone of city commissionerate have received money from Nasir’s team in giving clearance to the illegal immigrants.

As such 15 illegal immigrants who secured Indian passports on the residential address of Masood Ali Khan from Chanchalguda were favoured by the ASI and constable. Meanwhile, the Task Force police swung into action and nabbed one Ansari from Mumbai from Falaknuma police station limits. Ansari migrated to Hyderabad some years back and was involved in the passport scam over a long time.

According to highly placed sources, Ansari earlier worked in some departments as an outsourcing employee and developed contacts with the officers who approve and issue Aadhaar cards, voter identification cards and birth certificates. With his ‘friendly’ relation, he managed to provide the identification cards that were essential to apply for an Indian passport.

Ansari’s detention has exposed the role of Basheer, police constable working in Special Branch of city police and Saleem, Home Guard in Passport Verification Cell (PV Cell). During his early tasks, Ansari used to give Rs 5,000 to Special Branch constable Basheer, not to write negative comments during verification of residential address of the applicant. The understanding between Ansari and Basheer helped about 11 illegal immigrants from various countries to get Indian Passports without any hindrance.

Later, constable Basheer contacted Home Guard Saleem and managed in such a way that any passport related to the illegal immigrants would be attached to Basheer for verification. In some cases, he convinced his colleagues to not verify the authenticity of the applicants considering them as his relatives. Basheer and Saleem’s friendship had helped about eight illegal immigrants get each Indian passport for Rs 25,000.

While, the sleuths of the Special Investigation Team were restlessly working on Nasir’s case to collect more evidences and find out if any others were involved in the Passport scam. A petition was filed by the SIT officers in the concerned Court seeking custody of Nasir and five others for a period of 15 days for questioning.
