Naini calls for changes in Police Act

Hyderabad: The increasing chain-snatching menace in the city has rocked the Council during the Question Hour on Thursday. As the Opposition members targeted the government over ever increasing chain-snatchings and failure of police to tackle them, Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy threw a challenge that he would resign from his post if the opposition proved that the law and order has failed in the State. “I will put in my papers if you prove the charge,” he said in anguish.

The House also witnessed a verbal duel between the Treasury Benches and the opposition on the issue, which was raked up by Congress member Prabhakar Rao, who also kicked up a controversy saying policemen were playing cards on cellphones in the vehicles provided by the government and ignoring their legitimate duties of policing leading to spurt in the crime rate.

Adding salt to the injury, BJP member N Ramchander Rao alleged that terrorist activities and illegal supply of arms were going on in the city. Irked by the comments of opposition members, Naini, who was on toes for some time, snubbed both Prabhakar and Ramchander Rao.

Admitting that chain-snatchings were rampant despite round-the-clock police patrolling in the vulnerable areas, Naini favoured some changes in the Law to deal with criminals with an iron hand. He further said taking undue advantage of the old Police Act in force, chain-snatchers and criminals were going scot free in 15 days after being caught.

“To check this problem, we are invoking Preventive Detention Act and will make amendments to plug the loopholes,” he added. The Home Minister contended that crime rate was brought down in Hyderabad which was far less when compared to cities like Delhi, Bengaluru and others.

Giving pat to the police department for ensuring peaceful conduct of Ganesh festival and Godavari Pushkaralu sans any untoward incident, Naini said the Command Control Center kept continuous vigilance on law and order. Tenders process for construction of the CCC and setting up of adequate number of CCTVs was nearing completion, he said.
