Hyderabad: A most wanted criminal in the four southern States was nabbed by the Cyberabad police on Thursday at a village in Tamil Nadu when he visited a hospital for HIV treatment.

Bala Murugan, wanted for burglaries in banks and commercial establishments in Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, was evading the police for over a year. He was also involved in a spate of burglaries at various cooperative banks in Cyberabad including the ones at Malkajgiri and Ibrahimpatnam.

About six months ago, the Cyberabad police received information that the accused had bought plots in Shamshabad and sold them for about Rs 2 crore. Based on the contact number provided during the plot registration, the police traced Murugan to a village in Tamil Nadu.

When the teams of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana reached his home town, they found the house locked. After waiting for over two months for Murugan’s return, the police broke open the doors to search the house and found property worth Rs 1.25 crore in the house which included about Rs 20 lakh in cash and other gold and land documents.

Cyberabad DCP (Crimes) Dr B Naveen Kumar said, “Murugan managed to escape in our first attempt to nab him. This time, a collaborated effort by the police from AP, Karnataka and TN, we laid a trap to nab him,” the DCP said.

During investigation, the teams learnt that the accused was affected by HIV for a long time and was undergoing treatment. With additional information on the looks of Murugan, the teams alerted hospitals and NGOs that provide assistance to HIV patients.

“About 15 days ago, our team received a tip-off about Murugan’s visit to a government hospital in Tiruvarur in Tamil Nadu. The team rushed there and nabbed him,” DCP Naveen Kumar said.

“The accused is being brought on Prisoner Transit (PT Warrant) warrant to the city by Friday. Basing on his confession and further interrogation, more stolen property could be recovered,” the DCP said.
