Illegal assets worth 13 crore unearthed

Hyderabad: In what is considered to be a big catch, the Kukatpally Assistant Commissioner of Police N Sanjeeva Rao was arrested by the Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau officials on Saturday on charges of possessing disproportionate assets worth over Rs 13 crore.

The surprise checks by ACB officials started during early hours and continued for about six long hours at various places including the houses of his relatives across the State. Sources said that Sanjeeva Rao, who joined the police department in 1989 as a sub-inspector of police has been facing allegations of corruption in which ever department he worked. Later, he was promoted as Circle Inspector and also served as Deputy Superintendent of Police in Anti-Corruption Bureau.

On credible information that the ACP has been indulging in land settlements and various other corrupt practices, the ACB booked a case against him.

After gathering enough information about his corrupt activities, the ACB officials conducted simultaneous searches at his residence in Hasmathpet in Hyderabad and his relatives’ residences in Hyderabad, Warangal and Medak districts and also at his office at Kukatpally.

During the searches, the officials found one commercial complex at Hasmathpet in Balanagar division, one house at Hasmathpet, three flats at Old Vasavi colony in Kharkhana, 36.09 guntas agriculture land at Alinagar in Kotyal village in Mulug mandal in Medak district, 9.18 guntas agriculture land at Keshavaram village in Shameerpet mandal of Ranga Reddy district, one farm house in the agriculture land at Shameerpet, 44.12 guntas agriculture land at Bachannapet village in Warangal district, one Swift car (AP 10 AM 2277), one Honda City car (TS 03 AD 3366), 750 grams gold jewelry and Rs 3.29 lakh on the officer’s name,” said ACB Director General AK Khan.

ACB DSP Sunitha, who led the team during raids, told media that the property has been seized and the officer has been arrested.

“The market value of the seized assets on Saturday is approximately Rs 13 crore. ACP Sanjeev Rao has been arrested and sent to judicial remand. The case in still under investigation,” said Khan.
