The newly-married girl resorts to the extreme step just after returning from honeymoon; Relatives alleges dowry harassment

Karimnagar: A medical student pursuing her post graduation degree Sudinala Soumya (25) committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her hostel room on Tuesday night. The recently married medico returned to the college on Tuesday morning after one-month vacation and resorted to the extreme step.

Soumya, who was pursuing PG (Dermatology) in Paramitha Medical College, Nagunur, on the outskirts of Karimnagar town, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room when the college staff broke open the door at night. Soumya’s friends informed the college management as she did not respond when they knocked the door.

In the suicide note recovered by the police from her hostel room, Soumya made it clear that nobody was responsible for her death. “I have decided to end my life for the mistakes committed by me,” said Soumya, who completed her MBBS from Siddartha Medical College and got a PG seat in Prathima Medical College. Her father and brother both are doctors.

Though the exact reason for her death is yet to be known, family members alleged that Soumya took life as she was unable to tolerate torture by her in-laws. A native of Manirillagudem of Khammam district, Soumya married another MBBS graduate, Pavan Kumar Reddy, a native of Mothe village of Nalgonda district on February 27. She returned to the college on Tuesday morning after completing their honeymoon trip.

Speaking to the media, a cousin of the deceased alleged that Soumya committed suicide due to the torture of her in-laws. He said she hung herself after talking to her husband for more than three hours. She was found crying when her colleagues went to her room to invite her for supper. Though the Soumya family paid Rs 16 lakh dowry at the time of marriage, the parents of Pavan allegedly demanded another Rs 10 lakh.

As Soumya’s parents could not pay the amount, reportedly her in-laws walkout from the spot by leaving the newly married couple at the function hall. Contrary to the allegations, Karimnagar DSP J Rama Rao made it clear that her parents did not make any allegation against the in-laws and she did not mention any reason for her suicide in the note.

All the details would come out after the investigation. Answering a query, he said that nobody has lodged complaint with them. Circle Inspector of Police (Rural), Krishna was investigating the case, he added.
