Mahbubnagar: Mercury rose to 44 Degree Celsius in many places in the district on Saturday. With people preferring to stay indoors, the Mahbubnagar looked like a curfew-bound town.

All the 64 mandals in the district are reeling under severe heatwave conditions. The death toll due to sunstroke has already touched 30 in the district. As many as 20 sunstroke deaths reportedly occurred during the last one week.

Unofficial reports put the number of sunstroke deaths at 50. According reports reaching the district headquarters, as many as 12 persons died of sunstroke on Thursday and Friday.

Yasodamma of Atmakur mandal, Eedamma of Kodair, Narsamma of Peddakothapally and Ashok Reddy of Kothakota reportedly died on Thursday.

Kurmanna of Dhanwada mandal, Yellaiah of Peddamandadi, Sattasan Reddy of Addakal, Bhagyamma of Talakondapally and Pentaiah of Itikyal lost their lives on Friday.

Meanwhile, the CPI (M) expressed concern over the increase in number of sunstroke deaths in the district. It demanded that the State government announce Rs 10 lakh ex gratia each for sunstroke victims.
