Vijayawada: City police arrested 20 Inter-State gang members, who are experts in robbing valuables from the people here on Friday. These gang members camped at the bathing ghats, Pushkar Nagars, railway station, bus station, temples and other busy places in the city. Police have successfully noticed the movements of these gang members by using CC cameras, data base, finger print identifications and by keeping close watch on their movements.

During the last one week, police nabbed 115 suspects, of them 48 are women. These gang members rob gold chains by deftly cutting the chains worn by women with cutters. Some members use chemicals to create itching on the body and some others throw currency notes and coins to divert the attention before robbing the victims. These hardcore criminals have camped in Vijayawada since August 12, the beginning of Krishna Pushkaralu. Interestingly, some of them robbed gold articles and cash from pilgrims.

Speaking to the media, Commissioner of Police Gautam Sawang said police were on high alert since the beginning of Krishna Pushkaralu and taking all measures to check thefts. He said 1,400 CC cameras were installed, adding that fingerprint data came in handy to prevent thefts.

He said three gangs from West Bengal, three from Uttar Pradesh, three from Andhra Pradesh, two from Telangana, two from Tamil Nadu, one from Delhi, one from Madhya Pradesh and three from Odisha were waiting for the opportunity to rob the pilgrims in Vijayawada.
