Hyderabad: Footage from the CCTV cameras installed in residential areas in Uppal has helped police to identify and nab a chain snatcher on Tuesday. According to police, a woman K Rama from Uppal had lodged a complaint with the police on August 20, stating that she was robbed of her 3-tola gold chain by an unknown biker.

The police, as part of the investigation, collected footage from the CC cameras installed in the vicinity and made prints of the suspect who was seen moving on bike wearing a helmet. Photographs of the suspect were shared with all the police stations.

During vehicle checking at Chilkanagar in Uppal around 5 am on Tuesday, a team of police led by detective inspector K Jagannatha Reddy intercepted a biker (TS 08 EJ 2534) who was wearing a helmet and a dress, which were similar to that seen in the photograph.

When the police asked him to produce documents of the bike, the biker attempted to flee from the spot, but the constables caught him and took him to police station for enquiry. During questioning, the person, identified as Varala Srinivas (31), who works as a technician in a pest control agency, confessed to committing offences, said Malkajgiri in-charge DCP E Ramachandra Reddy.

The accused was involved in five snatchings and made two attempts in Ghatkesar and Kushaiguda areas. A total of 8.5 tolas of gold chains worth about Rs 2.5 lakh and a bike were seized from him.
