Hyderabad: If all goes well, the Intermediate students in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states will take separate examinations from this academic year.

According to an official of the Board of Intermediate (BIE), proposals have been sent to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments for the approval.

A senior official of the board, who mooted the idea, said, “As the question papers would be common for the students, if any turbulence happens in either of the states, the examinations would get affected. If separate examinations are held, there would be no problem for students,” an official said.

According to the officials there would be a board meeting regarding the same on Monday. “Both officials of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana would be called to discuss the proposals. The board would abide the outcome of the meeting,” officials informed.

They further said that preparation for examinations were underway even if either one of the government doesn’t give their consent for the examination.

While there will be common admissions for both the states for next 10 years as per the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act, if separate examinations are conducted, different weightage of marks would be awarded to the students in their respective states which may hamper chances of getting admission into professional courses.

“We have not yet discussed weightage of the marks. It doesn’t come under the purview of the board,” an official of BIE said.

However, the AP government had been contemplating to scrap EAMCET and to go with Tamil Nadu’s model of admission for the professional courses. The government had also constituted a committee to study the model. If the government goes ahead with the model, students of AP may not have an issue of Intermediate weightage in EAMCET.

On the other side the AP government is planing to follow the CBSE pattern rather than two years of Intermediate. “The government is mulling to remove inter first year and it wants to go the CBSE way of examination,” said an official of BIE. However, the Telangana government is in mood to scrap Intermediate first year.
