Vultures which were found in tens of thousands once upon a time, are on the verge of extinction. They are considered to be environment-friendly as they feed on bodies. They also have religious significance as Parsis leave the bodies of their kin for the vultures to feed on. To protect vultures, a special park would be established at Bejjur town.

Thimma Reddy, an official of the Forest Department, told The Hans India here on Saturday that there was a need to protect vultures to cleanse the environment. Bharatpur in Rajasthan had the highest number of vultures in the country and a park was set up exclusively for them. After Bharatpur, Adilabad had the highest number of vultures at 15.
These birds were sighted at the Rock Hill, spread over an area of 15 acres in Bejjur town. With the alarming decline in the number of vultures in Adilabad district, the officials started taking special measures to protect these birds. Biodiversity specialists were also roped in to protect the vultures. Thimma Reddy said vultures were dying due to inhalation of polluted air and feeding on contaminated carcasses.
Farmers usually spray chemicals and fertilizers on the crops they raise. Animals consuming such crops die due to poisoning and vultures, which feed on their carcases, also die in the process. Contaminated water in a nearby pond is also taking a toll on vultures, he said. Thimma Reddy said veterinary doctors prescribe Diclopanalik as a painkiller for animals. In some cases, animals that are administered this medicine die. When vultures feed on these carcases, they also die of poisoning, he said.
