Telugu Desam Party Nominee Locked in Room, AssaultedMangalagiri (Guntur): Telugu Desam Party activists not only resorted to detention of a ticket holder for the Mangalagiri Assembly seat, but also assaulted him. Followers of constituency in-charge Pothineni Srinivasa Rao locked up the candidate, Ganji Chiranjeevi, who was given B-form, in a room and assaulted him. Police had to intervene and resort to lathi-charge to restore calm after the fracas. Rao did not like party chief N Chandrababu Naidu ’s decision, as Chiranjeevi had joined TDP recently, after he was assured the municipal chairman’s post. He was also nominated for the same.

Rao tried his best to stall allotment of the ticket to Chiranjeevi and also succeeded. Upset, the latter rushed to Mangalagiri following the announcement of Tulasi Ramachandra Prabhu as the candidate. After Prabhu withdrew, Chirajeevi’s candidature was made public on Friday night. Trouble broke out on Saturday when he went to Rao seeking his blessings. Rao’s followers tried to prevent him from filing the nomination by assaulting and locking him in a room. Police, led by Mangalagiri DSP Madhusudhan Rao, rescued him.
