After the horrific Bengaluru ATM incident in November 2013 where a woman was attacked in broad daylight, there was a growing demand for safety of the public while withdrawing money at ATMs. This was further necessitated by the heist at the Mahesh Cooperative Urban Bank in AS Rao Nagar.

CV Anand, Cyberabad Police Commissioner, issued a notification to all the banks to employ 24x7 security at ATMs and the deadline given was January 15. However, the bank officials sought an extension of the deadline and Cyberabad Commissioner has now asked the banks to install the system by February 10. Early in December 2013, Anand issued a notification to all banks under the Cyberabad limits to install CCTV cameras, employ 24 hours security and provide doors with magnetic locks.

There are 1,037 ATMs under the Cyberabad zone. For every transaction, the cost incurred by a bank is around Rs 50-60, while at ATMs it is only Rs 12-15. But with overhead expenses like AC, transportation of cash, CCTV and security, per transaction cost rises up to Rs 70. The banks requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to allow them to collect the charge from the customers but the RBI has turned down the request.
