King Dhritarashtra was born in the Kuru race. He ruled over Hastinapura near Delhi. He had a hundred sons. They were called the Kauravas. The eldest of them was Duryodhana. Gandhari was Dhritarashtra’s wife. The King was blind. Gandhari loved him.

So she always covered her eyes with a cloth.

Dhritarashtra had a brother called Pandu. Pandu had two wives - Kunti and Madri. They had five sons: Yudhishthira, Bheema, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva. They were called the Pandavas. Yudhishthira was truthful, Bheema was strong, Arjuna was brave, Nakula was wise, and Sahadeva was very good and wise. All of them loved and worshipped their mother Kunti. Kunti asked them to marry Draupadi, daughter of King Drupada. The Pandavas obeyed their mother.
The Kauravas wanted the kingdom for themselves. They cheated Pandavas in the game of dice. They drove them out to a forest. In the end, the Pandavas and Kauravas fought against each other at Kurukshetra. That war is called Mahabharata. Gods supported Pandavas as they were gentle and just. So the Pandavas won. The Kauravas lost. Rishi Vyasa told the story of Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata. Like Ramayana, Mahabharata is a great poem.
