The civic administration of Vijayawada is awaiting the approval of financial bid of five crore rupees by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Commissioner G Veerapandian for installation of rooftop solar panels at selected corporation buildings on a pilot basis.

According to the solar department officials, VMC has sought the expertise of New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) to invite tenders to install solar panels on corporation buildings on Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, which is an estimated project of five crore rupees.

Soon after the tender approval, VMC will issue work order to the bidder to complete the installation of solar panels in six months period. The solar panels of 100 KW capacities at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore each would be installed at the VMC office, council hall, head water works and sewage treatment plants at Ajithsinghnagar and Ramalingeswara Nagar.

After the installation each 100 KW solar panel would generate 450 to 500 units of electricity per day. Earlier, the Central government had sanctioned Rs 1.5 crore to the corporation under the ‘Solar City’ project to install 500 KW solar panels in selected buildings.

The VMC authorities are keen on harnessing solar energy and reducing the power bills. If the pilot project turns out to be effective, the civic body is also exploring possibilities of installing solar panels at commercial complexes, educational institutions and public utilities to meet 10 per cent of city’s energy requirements through solar power in the next five years.
