Sunnam Cheruvu (Sundalavani Kunta) in Allapur at Balanagar is covered under the HMDA Lake Protection Committee. According to the survey by the GHMC in 2013, the waterspread of the lake is 15 acres, Full Tank Limit (FTL) is 98 meters and the bund length is 1,067 metres.

The lake is fed by rainwater but its size has now reduced due to construction of houses and apartments in shikkam lands abutting the lake which is in contravention of the Walta Act, 2002. The lake is 13 km away from Secunderabad Railway Station & 27 km away from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Prominent localities nearby include Raghavendra Colony, New Vivekananada Nagar, Borbanda and Madhapur.

History

According to locals, the Sunnam Cheruvu existed since the Nizam era. It is reported that a canal used to flow which was white in colour. People believed that it was Sunnam Bhoomi or Suddha Bhoomi (in reality no lime soil or land exists) and hence derived its name.

Problems

G Balaswamy and MV Krishna Rao, members of Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL) said that the lake has been subjected to rampant encroachments. “The FTL boundaries were broken and unauthorised roads were constructed. The entire lake and its surroundings has now turned into a cesspool. According to government land records the lake was originally spread over 24.12 guntas. The GHMC fenced the lake in 2013.

The cases filed in court are still sub-judice but rampant encroachments are in full swing. The government should look into these activities and take necessary action to put an end to this menace.”
