In spite of several petitions to different government departments and finally knocking on the doors of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), an authoritative body of the Supreme Court that looks into environmental problems seems to have no effect on the Telangana government’s plan of dewatering the Hussainsagar Lake.

In spite of several petitions to different government departments and finally knocking on the doors of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), an authoritative body of the Supreme Court that looks into environmental problems seems to have no effect on the Telangana government’s plan of dewatering the Hussainsagar Lake.

Even as the Save our Urban Lakes (SOUL) members gathered at the Bhatkhamma ghat on Monday, digging work was going on at brisk pace just 50 yards away at Saidinama Tomb. SOUL activists said that when they contacted officials they simply passed the buck and said that they were not authorised to speak. .

SOUL activists seemed lost and helpless at the state of affairs. Lubna Sarwath, the main petitioner, said, “The NGT was created to expidiously give its report on issues that it receives but it wants 40 days to submit a report. At this rate nothing would be left.”

On May 29, National Green Tribunal constituted a two-member expert committee which includes Prof. S Mohan, director, National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research (Ministry of HRD, New Delhi) Chennai and Advocate Devraj Ashok, government pleader. The court asked the committee to submit a detailed report by July 10.

Prof. Purushottam Reddy said, “In the name of repairing the sluices, the government is dewatering the lake. At this rate, Hussainsagar is all set to end up as another Masab Tank. Already 40 per cent of Hussainsagar has been dewatered.”

"The pollution control board has turned a blind eye to sewage treatment plants and they claim there are about twenty STPs to clean the industrial zone. We request them to use the same water which has been released into the Hussainsagar lake if they are clean," said activist BV Subba Rao.
