The South Central Railway celebrated World Environment Day in a befitting manner by commencing the run of the Main Line Diesel Locomotive fuelled with a blend of Bio-Diesel and traditional High Speed Diesel (HSD) in the city on Friday. Incidentally, this is also a first attempt to go the eco-friendly way on the Indian Railways. Umesh Singh, Additional General Manager, SCR inaugurated the Bio-Diesel facility at Railway Consumer Depot (RCD) Sanathnagar, where the first diesel Locomotive (No. 14974/KZJ/WDG-3A) was fuelled with a blend of 5 per cent Bio-diesel with 95 per cent of traditional HSD oil.

The use of bio-diesel is a landmark achievement which would bring down dependency on fossil fuel and also entail a substantial reduction in foreign exchange on procurement on HSD oil. It will also have the added benefit of earning huge carbon credits to the Railways since use of Bio-diesel as alternate fuel will reduce corresponding amount of carbon footprint.

SCR has also turned out record number of nine rakes fully equipped with bio-toilets, generation of solar energy to the tune of 1MW etc. The officials present on the occasion were S Kabeer Ahmad, chief mechanical engineer, KP Somkuwar, chief workshop engineer, Gajanan Mallya, Sr Dy General Manager, P Ravi Kumar, chief motive power engineer (diesel), Chandrima Roy, additional divisional railway manager, Secunderabad Division, TSN Murthy, Dy. chief mechanical engineer (rolling stock & locomotives) and N Srinivasa Reddy, Sr divisional mechanical engineer (operations & freight), Secunderabad division, SCR.
