The fourth edition of Hyderabad Rockathon aimed to highlight how the Deccan Rocks, Hyderabad’s great wealth can be rocking too, will be held at Ghar-e-Mubarak near Taramati Baradari on November 22. The event will be sponsored by Telangana Tourism and is jointly organised by the Society to Save Rocks and the Great Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC). “The events for the day are laid out to suit different age groups,” informed a spokesperson from GHAC.
“Telangana is the only State that has a Society that focuses exclusively on rock conservation and importantly so. Rocks are instrumental in raising the water table something we all need to pay attention to considering the water shortage expected in the coming summer. Rainfall, soil, mineral content, herbal plants, insects, birds and animals too are affected when rocks are destroyed. Any surprise why the ecological balance is disturbed? In the recent cyclone that hit Vishakapatnam destruction of hillocks along the coast added to the damage of the surrounding villages due to lack of any barriers to the very strong winds,” said Sangeeta Verma from Society to Save Rocks.
“The Society to Save Rocks is in its twentieth year and tirelessly spreads awareness through rock walks, lectures and programmes such as Rockathon to educate people about the crucial need to preserve the 2500 million year old rocks that are still standing,” she added.
The Rockathon promises to test fitness levels of participants with trail biking, rappelling, ziplining and the grey cells with a Rock quiz besides other fun activities. The event begins at 7.30 am will be inaugurated by Azmeera Chandulal, Minister Tourism & Culture. For more information visit www.saverocks.org and Rockathon registrations can be done online www.HyderabadRockathon.com.
