With this year's 'We can. I can' campaign on the World Cancer Day (WCD), the FPA raised awareness to prove to the public that everyone can play a vital role in battling cancer

The FPA (Family Planning Association), Hyderabad conducted an awareness programme on cervical and breast cancer in Medak on the World Cancer Day (WCD) on Thursday. Organised on the theme, ‘We Can. I Can’ in coordination with the PHC centre, women were explained on how they can prevent themselves from cancer by regular check-up and how others can ensure that cancer incidences reduce and people are successfully treated.

Dr Renu Kapoor, branch manager, FPA India, Hyderabad, said, “Every year more than eight million people die from cancer worldwide. This year’s theme, which marks the tenth anniversary of the global awareness campaign, is to explore as to how every person can make a difference in the fight against cancer.”

  • Make healthy lifestyle choices that include avoiding tobacco, getting plenty of physical activity, eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol, and staying safe in the sun.
  • Learn about the signs and symptoms of cancer and early detection guidelines.
  • Support cancer patients and survivors with the physical and emotional impacts of cancer even after treatment ends.

We can

  • Educate people about the link between lifestyle behaviors including smoking, poor diet and lack of physical activity.
  • Dispel myths that lead to stigma and discrimination against people with cancer.
  • Encourage schools and workplaces to implement nutrition and physical activity policies that can help people to adopt healthy habits.
  • Improve access to affordable cancer health care for all populations.
