Hyderabad: The removal of None Of The Above (NOTA) button from the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the recently held Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections was a grave violation of the Constitution, said the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief spokesperson Dasoju Sravan Kumar. He also indicated the possibility of tampering of the EVMs in the polls.

Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan here on Thursday, he said the TRS had tried to remove the NOTA button earlier in 2013 under the pretext that it was in pink colour. He alleged that the party has succeeded in getting it the button removed this time by controlling the Election Commissioner Nagi Reddy. According to him, the ruling party wanted to conceal discontent levels among the people and coerced the Election Commissioner to this effect.

Sravan also alleged that the EVMs that were used in the GHMC election were tampered and the results were rigged. He reminded the present Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao showing a video to the media in 2009 alleging EVMs tampering in the erstwhile election. “But the TRS has no problems with the EVMs now while the Opposition parties lodged complaints of tampering with primary evidence,” he pointed.

Sravan also said the fact that the EVMs were not fitted with micro printers which could give the voters a receipt of their vote amounts to a Constitutional violation. He said the Supreme Court gave a clear verdict that the voter had a right to know to whom he cast his vote.

The chief spokesperson declared that the Congress party would fight for the cancellation of these elections in courts as it has sufficient evidence to prove that tampered EVMs were used in the elections.
