Governor inaugurates centre for lacrimal disorders

Governor ESL Narasimhan inaugurated the ‘Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Dacryology’ on Friday. The institute is targeted towards treating lacrimal disorders at LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) and will be led by Dr Javed Ali.

With this institute, LVPEI became the only hospital in the world to provide the facility. The centre is equipped with operating suites with a team of Optometrists and Ophthalmologists.

Acknowledging the achievements of the Institute, Dr Gullapalli N Rao, Founder-Chair, LVPEI said, “Yet another institute of excellence which will focus on disorders of the lacrimal system (tear drainage), ‘The Institute of Dacryology’ got a boost with a pledge of support from the Shri Kudilal Govindram Seksaria Foundation of Mumbai.

The incidence of this disease is found in around 10 per cent of all patients that visit tertiary centres like our Hyderabad campus. Efforts are required to address the growing need to find solutions to these problems with the common complaint of “excessive tearing”. This can then contribute to the larger goal of a healthy population.”

Dacryology deals exclusively with watering of the eyes and disorders of the tear drainage. Any disorders affecting this system can lead to impaired tear flow with resultant watering, infections (Dacryocystitis) and sometimes even orbital infections. At LVPEI, the tear duct is evaluated thoroughly not only from the eye side, but also through the nose using multiple advanced techniques.

Problems in the lacrimal system are seen in patients of all ages and the associate problems that the lacrimal diseases cause to the working age population is multi-fold. Excessive watering from the eye disturbs their work schedule, meeting deadlines etc, and could lead to severe sight threatening situations.
