Nizamabad: Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said that India’ first Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad played a significant role in the freed struggle of the country and it was due to the sacrifices that he made, Indians were able to enjoy freedom today.

Paying glowing tributes to Azad on the occasion of his 128th birth anniversary at the Rajiv Gandhi Auditorium in the town on Friday, Srinivas Reddy said that Azad served the nation for 11 years from 1947 to 1958 with great distinction and brought several changes in the education field.

The Agriculture Minister said that standards of education rose to a new high in the field of education.Due to his outstanding contribution to the cause of education, Azad’s birthday was being celebrated as National Education Day in the country, he added.

He said that Maulana Azad took several steps for improving the standards of the minorities.
Minister Pocharam said that the Chief Ministers of undivided Andhra Pradesh never took the advice of Maulana Azad seriously nor put his suggestions into practice.

It was only Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao who was taking Azad’s suggestions seriously and taking steps to improve the educational standards of the minorities, he added. He said that no other Chief Minister in the past seriously thought of improving the educational standards minorities and backward classes, except KCR, the Minister added.

The Agriculture Minister said that the TRS government would take steps in setting up of residential schools and colleges in the districts, besides appointing teaching and non-teaching staff.

Recently a proposal was discussed in the State Cabinet to set up 90 new residential schools across the State and most of them would be located in Nizamabad district as the percentage of the minority community was very high here.

In future 500 new residential schools would be established, he added. He said that buildings for the new schools would be constructed on a five-acre land and Rs 20 crore would be sanctioned to each building, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Bodhan MLA and State Minorities commission Chairman said that the State government was implementing several schemes for the minorities.

District Collector Dr Yogitha Rana paid glowing tributes to Azad and described him as a great freedom fighter and educationist who was given a befitting title of ‘Maulana’ for his eminence. MLC Bhupathi Reddy, Nizamabad Mayor Akula Sujatha and others were present.
