It was an impulsive decision that took shape out of the desire to do something for the deprived. City-based fashion designer Shilpa Reddy used Diwali, the time for gifting, as the occasion to appeal to her friends and customers to donate books that they have not read in a while to ‘Shilpa Reddy Studio’.

Reddy went on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and made this appeal to give away books that could be sent to orphanages and government schools. “And the response was beyond expectation!” says the designer.

Reddy shares, “It was a small initiative and I asked my friends Lakshmi, Sam and Regina to share my post. And before I realised it, books came from all over, not just from Hyderabad.

I realised that people really want to help, and they do not know how. They need someone they trust upon whom they can depend. A lot of organisations came forward requesting for books.

Someone also suggested ‘Pustakar’, an organisation that circulates books to all government schools. I am starting to learn new things through the whole process.”

Happy with the response, the designer extended the book collection drive till the end of November. Interested people can donate books drop them at ‘N Grill’, Road No. 36, Jubilee Hills.
