Hanamkonda: Fellow of Academy of Sciences and retired professor of IIT, Chennai, Prof R Srinivasan has stressed on the need to modify the existing experimental techniques in the colleges.

He addressed a gathering of science faculty at the inaugural session of fifteen-day ‘Science Academies Refresher Course in Experimental Physics’, which is being organised by Kakatiya University department of physics at the university here on Tuesday.

The programme was sponsored by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and The National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad. Prof Srinivasan is the director of the workshop.

The main objective of the programme is to introduce some new equipment for conducting experimental classes in B Sc, B Tech, M Sc (Physics) courses.

The workshop aims at explaining the essence of high precision, low cost experimental techniques.

For conducting practical classes, low cost and effective equipments are being designed and it would be also easy to conduct the experiments within the allotted period. So far 81 workshops have been conducted and the workshop at KU is 82nd.

KU Vice-Chancellor Prof R Sayanna in his address has stressed on the importance of practical component in curriculum.

Practical classes are very important in understanding the basic concepts but unfortunately students doing experiments in the labs is decreasing.

There is a need to improve laboratory infrastructure in the colleges, he added. The course coordinator and physics department head Prof AS Nageshwar Rao said eminent academicians are invited to deliver special lectures as resource persons on experiments along with hands on training in laboratory.

Training on 17 types of science equipment would be given, he informed. The university science dean Prof Y Pramila Devi, physics board of studies chairman B Venkatram Reddy, faculty members N Gopikrishna, Prof V Gangadhar Reddy, S Kalahasti, J Laxman Naik, CJ Srilatha and others were present.
