Hanamkonda: Revolutionary poet P Varavara Rao demanded immediate release of seven human rights activists arrested by police near Dummugudem in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district on Sunday.

Speaking to presspersons in Hanamkonda on Monday, he alleged that Telangana police have arrested the activists, who were on a fact finding mission to look into the encounter of Maoist Sayanna in Wazedu mandal in Bhupalpalli district. In order to prevent trouble from human rights organisations and advocates, the local police have handed over the arrested activists to Chhattisgarh police, who lodged them at Kunta police station. The lives of the arrested persons were under threat, he said.

Chikkudu Prabhakar, R Laxmaiah, Durga Prasad, B Ravindranath, D Prabhakar, Rajendra Prasad and Nazeer were the arrested persons and they were associated with Telangana Praja Front and Telangana Democratic Front.

It was sad to arrest the persons who were on a fact finding mission. The Telangana government was brutally suppressing human rights activists in a manner that happened never before. When asked about the arrest of the activists, Home Minister N Narsimha Reddy feigned ignorance, Varavara Rao alleged.

Since the activists were arrested by Telangana police, the State government has the responsibility of ensuring their safe release, he asserted. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was following the footsteps of former CMs J Vengal Rao, M Chenna Reddy, N T Rama Rao, YS Rajashekara Reddy and AP CM N Chandrababu Naidu in violating the human rights.

Varavara Rao strongly condemned the TRS government’s denial to organise a meeting in memory of late Akula Bhumaiah, a Telangana activist and leader of Telangana Praja Front at Peddapalli. Bhumaiah had actively worked for statehood cause since 1969 till his death. ‘KCR’s experience in fighting for the cause doesn’t equal what Bhumaiah has offered for the statehood cause. The TRS government should tender apology to Telangana public for denying permission to organise a meeting in memory of Bhumaiah,’ he added.6,000 Adivasis and Maoists killed in eight months

The State government’s violence against Adivasis and Maoists, who were working with Adivasis in Chhattisgarh, has reached its zenith. As part of the Mission-2016 taken up by the State and the Central governments as part of Operation Green Hunt, nearly 6,000 Adivasis and Maoists were killed in the State during the last eight months time, Varavara Rao said.Human rights activists and journalists, who were trying to expose the inhuman acts of Chhattisgarh government and police, were being arrested and booked in false cases, he alleged.
