Warangal: They may have surplus finances to live life king size but what makes them poor was the loneliness. There have been many untold miseries of the elderly parents, whose children have gone abroad in pursuit of dollar dreams or higher education.

But this Sankranthi is going to be different for 134 parents of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) living in Warangal Commissionerate. Thanks to the Warangal cops’ resolve to console these outcasts in their own families through their ongoing programme ‘Senior Citizen Care and Concern’.

In fact, the programme was aimed at looking after the families of senior citizens, whose children were away due to compulsions of professions. As part of the programme, the police have been calling on these elderly denizens twice or thrice a month and enquiring about their health and other issues if they have any. This apart, the police also procured the information of the workers and housemaids employed by these senior citizens.

To make this Sankranthi more special to these elderly parents, Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu, who initiated several smart policing initiatives, this time around has come up with a programme to present them with a sari and dhoti (pancha) along with sakinalu, Telangana’s pride recipe.

The Commissioner said: “All that we wanted was to create a sense of confidence among the elderly persons that the police they were not alone and the police are just a call away from them to help them.” He said that they have identified 134 parents of NRIs living alone in the Commissionerate area. We are going to surprise them with a little gift hamper that contains handloom clothes and Sankranthi special dish – sakinalu.

Speaking to The Hans India, K Laxmana Chary, retired employee residing in Bank Colony of Warangal, said: “It’s tough to be away from my only son Pramod Kumar, who got a job in Ireland. But we have no option. With the police frequenting to my home at regular intervals, it created a sense of confidence in me that I am not alone.”
V Damyanthi of Kothawada in Warangal whose only daughter lives in Singapore after she got married to a NRI, said: “The police enquire about my health and also vouched support to help me at any point of time as I live single.”
