Congress leaders hit out at Katiyar for insulting Priyanka
Senior Congress leaders here have taken serious exception to the sexist remarks made by BJP Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh Vinay Katiyar about Congress star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi.
Warangal: Senior Congress leaders here have taken serious exception to the sexist remarks made by BJP Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh Vinay Katiyar about Congress star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi.
It might be noted that speaking to a television news channel on Wednesday, the BJP MP’s reported reaction on Congress party’s decision in appointing Priyanka Gandhi as star campaigner in UP elections triggered controversy across the nation.
Katiyar was quoted to have said ‘There are more beautiful women star campaigners in our party than Priyanka Gandhi. We have more beautiful star campaigners, artistes, heroines...they are better’.
BJP leader’s remarks were shocking and atrocious stated, former Mayor Errabelli Swarna, Congress district president N Rajender Reddy and City Congress working president Rajanala Srihari.
Demanding public apology from Katiyar for his comments, which they said the comments were in utterly bad taste. Being a lawmaker he should have been careful while speaking in the public domain, they suggested.
Swarna describing Katiyar’s comments as misogynist said it exposes the BJP's mindset towards women. The leaders in the BJP, in particular women leaders, should respond on the comments by their party leader, she demanded.
“Priyanka Gandhi is going to lead the party in the days to come. It is sad to make such demeaning comments about a person coming from a family which served and sacrificed their lives for the nation,” Swarna said speaking to The Hans India.
The City Congress working president Srihari, along with a large number of party workers, has staged dharna in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue in Warangal on Thursday in protest against Katiyar’s comments.
He demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party president Amit Shah should take the responsibility for the BJP Rajya Sabha members’ comments and tender an apology to the women in the nation.
‘BJP leaders were afraid of Congress claiming power in UP and hence resorting to despicable means to target Congress leaders. They should learn to respect women by their capabilities and should not assess them by their physical features,’ Srihari said.
Referring to the MP’s refusal to apologise and making another sexist remark about his own party leader Smriti Irani on Thursday, the Congress leader pointed out that it shows the mentally bankrupt state of Katiyar.
The party frontal organisations leaders K Srinivas, Md Ayub, G Linga Murthy, G Raju, M Padma, Jannu Vijaya, Jannu Prabhavathi and others were present.
