While trying hard to earn Rs 500 a day, we may end up paying Rs 1,000 as fine to traffic cops, concerns expressed by auto-men

City auto drivers have been hit the worst, due to the State Government’s GO No 108, which has increased traffic fines for minor offences to the amount of Rs 1,000 for certain traffic offences. Auto Driver Unions JAC has launched protests at Dharna Chowk on Thursday, with the support of AITUC, IFTU, TADJAC, CITU, TNTUC, BMS, APADS, TATU, TADU, TTUC, GHADU and Auto Drivers Association.

Extending support to the Auto Drivers’ protest, TJAC chairman Prof Kodandaram said that auto drivers hardly make Rs 400 a day, that too if they have a profitable day. Fining them with Rs 1000 for every single offence would not only bankrupt them, but will also bring their families on the roads.

He said that TJAC would meet Transport Minister Botcha Satyanarayana, along with few other Ministers and request the State government to cancel GO No. 108. TJAC would also demand to cancel ‘e-challan system’ immediately, he added.

Amanullah Khan, president of BMS, said, there are more chances of traffic police misusing the GO. He said the authorities have failed to address issues like making designated areas for parking and have brought in this GO only to divert attention from their failures. He said that earlier, vehicles used to be categorised under light motor vehicles, medium load vehicles and heavy load vehicles and accordingly fines were imposed as the earnings varied depending upon the size of the vehicle. However, with all this vehicle have to bear the same brunt, which was outrageous, he added.

If the GO is not withdrawn, then auto drivers will have to look for other means of earning as it would be impossible to make a living by trying hard to earn Rs 500 a day, one may end up paying Rs 1,000 as a fine to policemen, echoed many auto drivers.

Auto drivers, lorry drivers and almost all private transport organisations have threatened to completely stall public and business transport services in the city if the State government doesn’t cancel the GO - 108 immediately.
