Autumn Moon Festival, the harvest festival of China is being celebrated today. Golden Dragon restaurant at Taj Krishna celebrates the festival with epicurean delights including the traditional moon cakes

In Hyderabad, where no festival is complete without good food, several restaurants hold food festivals to mark the occasion. This time in addition to special dishes that reflect the traditional cuisine of the Zhou dynasty created by Master Chef Hung Fong Ng, Chinese specialty restaurant, Golden Dragon of Taj Krishna has included two varieties of moon cakes; traditional home-made ones that are slightly sweetened black bean paste covered with rolled flour and baked and the ice-skin moon cakes that are made by stuffing black bean paste in a roll of baked flour and baked together again. The Chinese eat moon cakes as they come together outside their homes to watch the moon on this day.

Soft and delicious spicy honey mustard fish, the crunchy dry-cooked water chestnut mushroom and cauliflower butter chilli garlic and double cooked sliced chilli chicken which is boiled before it is fried, Taichin prawns – the starter menu of the Autumn Moon Festival has a good choice of seafood and meat.

From the soup menu one can choose the typical Chinese clear Chicken Soup with white and black fungus or sea food onion coriander soup if you are looking for an assault of flavours for your palate. The vegetarian minced tofu and burnt garlic coriander soup is also a good choice – burnt garlic never fails the flavour test.

Chinese food is all about flavours and the chef has ensured abundance. Velvet crabmeat black bean oyster, braised prawns in chilli garlic sauce with crushed cashew nuts, pickled chilli chicken with chachoy, zucchini water chestnuts and mushroom in devil sauce and sliced chilli bean potatoes can be had along with spicy chilli bean flat noodles and minced chicken and vegetable fried rice. Golden Dragon’s Autumn Moon Festival gets the points for its extensive menu and subtle and refined flavours and the moon cakes literally take the cake.
