Residents of Pragati Nagar have been facing severe problems for the past few years due to an open drain in the area. It was built to allow rain water to flow through a canal that passes through many houses in the colony.
Works are still pending for the construction of the drain which began in 2003. Only 50% of the works have been carried out in the past ten years. No further works have been carried out to finish it.
The nala also serves as a drainage canal. The waste, connected through pipes from a few houses, accumulates, thus restricting the free flow of water. The canal emanates foul smell and is also responsible for spreading contagious diseases like nausea, fever, headache, stomach ache including breeding of mosquitoes and pigs.
“The issue was brought to the notice of the GHMC and requests were made through grievance centre (internet) to look into the matter, finish the pending works and cover the canal as soon as possible. I got a message saying that the problem would be solved. The estimate has been prepared, but it is taking time due to financial issues. But the situation remains the same after so many requests. So much time is being wasted on this,” says Dhanraj Patangay, a resident.
As it is a residential colony with people of different age groups, it is imperative to do the needful. The condition worsens when it rains, as kids, people and animals, too fall in the canal. One cannot figure out the existence of a canal sometimes, due to the overflowing water. The edges of the canal cannot be recognised while it is raining, as the water overflows.
“So many accidents have occurred where people have slipped and fallen into it, and a few lives were lost due to the irresponsible attitude of the authorities. It is really sad that the concerned authorities fail to realise the gravity of the problem that the residents are facing,” lamented a resident.
