SCB finalises Reservation Of Wards. The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) authorities have finalised the reservation process of the eight civilian wards, in view of the forthcoming elections due by February or March 2014.

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) authorities have finalised the reservation process of the eight civilian wards, in view of the forthcoming elections due by February or March 2014. Except ward number 8 reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC), the other wards which were earlier general will now be reserved for women and vice versa. Based on the electorate and population of the SCs, the authorities had announced reservations through a draw of lots.

According to an official source, wards 1, 2, 5 and 6 have been reserved for general, while 3, 4 and 7 have been reserved for women. Incidentally, this is the second time ward 8 has been reserved for SCs. In 2008 elections, wards 1, 5 and 6 were reserved for women; 2, 3 and 4 were general and ward no 8 was reserved for SC.

Originally the tenure of the present body was to expire by May 2013. But the Ministry of Defence (MoD) extended the tenure for another six months, up to December 31, due to delay in preparing the voters' list. The SCB is now waiting for either election notification for the period 2014-2018 or for further extension of this term beyond December 31. There are many speculations that further extension might not be granted, which will automatically lead to dissolution of the civic body by January 1, 2014. In that case, there would an emergent need to nominate a member who should be elected by the board before December 31 2013, to administrate the affairs of the cantonment board till a new elected body takes charge.

All the board members are showing extreme interest to become a nominated member, to administrate the affairs of the SCB single-handedly, till the new elected body takes charge in 2014.

MD Afzal Mohiuddin, health wing superintendent and elections in-charge, SCB, said, according to 2011 Census, the population in eight civilian wards is 2,17,910, while the scheduled caste population is 28,503. The SC population in ward 8 is 6,411 which is the highest amongst all the wards.

Based on the SC population percentage, the authorities had declared that ward 8 would be reserved for SCs at the board meeting held recently. Now, the process of reservation of wards for women and general has been completed. All the board members are anxiously waiting for either extension of time or dissolution of the existing body.
