Did you know that there is a masjid atop Charminar?, Charminar, Masjid on top of Charminar Monument. This historical masjid is at a height of 160 feet above the ground and the diameter of its minarets is 80 feet.
Masjid undergoing renovation works for the past few days
Charminar is constantly under media spotlight. Anything that happens in and around this monument, finds prominence in the media. Tourists, both Indian and foreign, have ceaselessly clicked and recorded this stunning beauty, which is a matter of pride. Surprisingly, an aspect about this eternal tourist attraction is unknown to many- It houses a masjid on top of the monument
When one talks of Hyderabad city, the first thing that comes to their mind is the heritage monument Charminar. It was built around 400 years ago by the ruler Quli Qutub Shah to commemorate the elimination of plague scourge from the city. He is said to have prayed for the end of the disease that was ravaging the city and vowed to build a Masjid at the very place where he was praying.
Though everyone knows about the monument, there are very few who know about the masjid that is built at the top of Charminar. It has been undergoing renovation for the past few days. The masjid is located at the top of the monument and is literally invisible. In fact, people who run shops and businesses around the Charminar too were surprised to hear about the masjid.
This historical masjid is at a height of 160 feet above the ground and the diameter of its minarets is 80 feet. As the mosque had not been checked regularly, it required some repairs and renovation. The repeated representations made to the Archaeological Survey of India regarding repair work of the masjid fell on deaf ears. The repairs were avoided sometimes on the pretext of insufficient funds and sometimes due to the dearth of experts.
If one glances through the structure from the ground from the Sardar Mahal Road side, one would see the repair work being carried out. A six-member team of experts from Tamil Nadu, led by Ravi Chandra, is working on the project. The renovation work was progressing at a brisk pace, with the inner arches of the monument getting a chemical wash and the damages being coated with cement.
The workers are now on a break and the work would resume on January 21.
