Hyderabad: The entrance examination for the Doctoral of Philosophy (PhD) is likely to be common for all conventional Telangana universities starting from the next academic year. Sources in Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) said that the government has been seriously pushing for a common entrance test.

An official of the TSCHE said that currently there are around 11 universities, including technical and other universities in the state. “The government is mooting a plan to have a common entrance exam for conventional universities like Osmania University, Kakatiya University, Palamuru University and Telangana University. The entrance test for technical universities would be different,” the official informed.

Teachers of Osmania University said that conducting a common examination would be advantageous for the students. “Currently, the entrance exam is conducted once in two or three years as there is no clarity on the number of vacancies. Therefore, there is no guarantee that the examination would be held inspite of the notification.

A common examination on the other hand can be conducted every year and admissions can be made on the basis of merit,” former OU registrar, Prof. K Pratap Reddy said. He added that the practice of students blackmailing professors for backdoor admissions would considerably come down. “Common admissions not only benefits students but also enhance the university’s image,” Reddy opined.

However, a senior professor is of the view that the government should take the crunch of supervisors in universities seriously. “What is the use of conducting common entrance examinations when there is a severe dearth of supervisors in the university? Several senior professors have already retired and more will retire in days to come. How will a common entrance examination benefit students?” he questioned.

Currently, candidates who clear the National Eligibility Test conducted by University Grants Commission are given the first preference for the research fellowship. The next preference is given to candidates who clear the State Eligibility Test followed by candidates who clear the PhD test conducted by state universities.

“The government should discourage state universities’ PhD tests. It should concentrate more on the candidates who have qualified the NET and SET examinations. Candidates who have qualified SET should also be given the fellowship on par with the NET candidates. Giving fellowships will inculcate interest in research among scholars,” said a senior professor.
