With temperatures rising, the Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) has made arrangements to help animals beat the heat. All the animal enclosures have been provided with sprinklers, air-coolers and foggers, besides an air conditioner for two jaguar cubs. “We have taken relevant measures depending on what best suits animals,” informed NZP assistant curator Syed Maqsood Mohiuddin.

Cooling effect

  • 150 sprinklers
  • 15 motors of 5hp power for six enclosures
  • Foggers at 100 enclosures of birds and reptiles
  • 25 air-coolers for monkeys, big cats
  • An air-conditioner for two jaguar cubs

Foggers at 100 enclosures will help birds and reptiles beat the heat while the 25 air-coolers placed at the night shelters and enclosures of monkeys and big-cats will help them keep cool. The zoo management has spent close to five lakh rupees per year on the maintenance of the cooling equipment. “Most of the infrastructure that is needed to keep the enclosures cool is in place and most of the work is done within the department.

For instance, the sprinkler lines are in place; only the nozzles need to be replaced,” Syed Maqsood observed. As days pass, rain guns would be put in use at bigger enclosures that could throw water from a distance of 20 plus metres. Foggers that create mist are used at the bird enclosures. In certain enclosures, thunga grass is placed on the roof to keep the temperatures low. A senior zoo official informs that with the use of all this, the temperature inside the zoo falls by a few degrees.
