The Nair Service Society, a socio-cultural association of Keralites in the twin cities, celebrated Malayalam New Year Vishu at the Ved Vihar Community Hall on Tuesday. In spite of inclement weather, Nair family members attended the celebrations in good number. Highlight of the programme was the Vishusadya, the traditional feast with all special Kerala dishes.

In spite of inclement weather, Nair family members attended the celebrations in good number. Highlight of the programme was the Vishusadya, the traditional feast with all special Kerala dishes. The programme started with the Vishukkani arranged at the entrance of the Community Hall.
President of the NSS, Senior Journalist CG Chandra Mohan, along with general secretary G Suresh Kumar inaugurated the programme. Chandra Mohan, in his presidential address said that Nair Service Society, from its humble beginning has today grown as one of the leading Malayali socio-cultural organisation with the biggest number of families as members in the twin cities.
Suresh announced that a Vanitha Vedi (ladies wing) and Nair Yuvajana Vedi (youth wing) will be launched by the NSS soon to provide an opportunity to the Nair women and youth to participate in all the cultural and community welfare activities of the association. He gave a clarion call to the women and youth to come forward in large numbers since the age-old values and traditions of community are more relevant today than ever before.
Later senior citizens who have been married for 40 to 50 years were honoured with a shawl and memento. Highlights of the cultural programmes were the traditional Thiruvathirakali, group dance by Chintal wing, hilarious skits by Srinarayanan and Mahesh Menon, classical dance by Pankaj and Kavitha Parayanam by Jijesh Nambiar of Malabar Gold and Navneet. The cultural programme was followed by the traditional Visdhusadya. Chandra Mohan and adviser Gopalakrishna Karanavar later presented Vishukkaineettam, the speciality of Vishu, to all those present for the celebrations.
