Naatyasamgraha, a local association of dancers, presented a dance programme in the colourful and bustling environs of Shilparamam recently. The Jawahar Lal Nehru Manipuri Dance Academy from Imphal presented a stirring Pung Cholam and delightful Vasant Ras. Jayesh Ranjan and Kishan Rao presided over the event.

Pung Cholam, which is usually the prelude to Ras Lila, started off with a rousing beat on the drums. The artistes had long drums called pungs, which are sacred and revered, hung from their shoulders and performed amazingly without missing the rhythm. Yellow and red sashes hung from their shoulders. The flow of music was never broken by the acrobatics as they were simultaneously dancing and drumming. Attired in white turbans, they leaped about the stage.

At one point executing a startling jump where their turbans flew off in unison drew applause. The effort that went in to performing the piece was evident in this group presentation by Jey Singh, Ramesh Singh and the others. Vasant Ras, the dance of Krishna with the gopis in spring, was thoroughly enjoyed. The movements of Ras are grandiose and delicately beautiful. The eyes are fixed at the finger tips.

Acute and complex steps are used to portray the pure qualities of the Lord. Handsome Krishna, portrayed by Sangeeta, had an elaborate costume comprising a saffron dhoti, green waistcoat and a peacock feather with dazzling white tassels. Graceful gestures and movements showed the elegance of the Manipuri dance. As the Gopis and Radha, played by Priyambada, danced together with Krishna it was easy to visualise the environs of Vrindavan.
