Lopamudra Mitra learnt music from the age of eight from my father Pranab Mitra. Subsequently she learnt classical music from Rita Roy and Pandit Arun Badhuri. Later she got interested in theatre and found mentoring from her father’s friend Samir Chattopadhyay.
“I started singing the poems of many famous Bengali poets and this was something I always cherished. I also took guidance in ‘Nazrulgeeti’ from Sukumar Mitra and Rabindra Sangeet from Subhas Chowdhury, Subinoy Roy and Aurobindo Biswas,” she says.
Lopamudra shares that her favorite song is “Benimadhab Benimadhab’. It’s a song where the text is a poem by Bengali poet Joy Goswami “Malatibala Balika Bidyalay”, “Dha Dhina Na Tina” and “Leelabali” are some of the many offbeat musical compositions, which have always kept the audience on their toes thanks to some fast and interesting beats along with the lyrics.
“This was my fifth show in Hyderabad and I have fond memories for the city. It has very good cultural spaces and people appreciate good music. I love to perform all my songs in this city, which has always wanted to listen to me. There is no particular format for a performance.
I take the flow of program as per my mood and the inspiration that I receive from the audience. Especially I have lot of interest in Rabindra Sangeet and folk music,” she elucidates.
She enjoys experimenting and adding modern elements of music to the folk genre and this resulted in a unique album ‘Chhata Dharo’, ‘Monfokira’ and ‘Pa-e Para Pha-e Fail’, which was very well appreciated world over.
This is a transition period for music business. “Today, we find that CD’s are vanishing from the market and technology has put all music either online or on mobiles and apps. I have started my own company ‘Lopamudra Productions’ to ensure that I can survive and also pursue creative works in audio and video format,” Lopmudra informs.
Lopamudra is also very fond of patriotic songs and would be bringing out many new albums in this genre.
