Hyderabad: Former Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy on Thursday ridiculed the claim by the TRS had secured the Metro Rail project for Hyderabad city. He said “I had cleared the proposal when I was the Union Minister for Urban Development.”
Speaking to media persons, Jaipal Reddy said he had taken steps to ensure that the Metro Rail project was cleared without following normal procedure. Thus the project came to Hyderabad, he said. The former Union Minister explained that the project proposal, estimated to cost Rs 14,132 crore, came to the Union Urban Development Ministry in March 2010.
Without referring the proposal to the Finance Ministry, he had cleared the project when he was the Union Minister for Urban Development Authority. “We had sanctioned the project, but KCR is taking credit for the entire project by sticking his posters on each pillar,” he said.
Jaipal Reddy explained that the UPA government, led Congress at the Centre, had approved a total of 17 projects under “Basic Services for Urban Poor” (BSUP) at an estimated cost of Rs 1,631 crore between 2006 and 2009.
Various projects worth Rs 2,463 crore under the scheme of UIG (Urban Infrastructure and Governance) were also taken up. He said the TRS, which was now bragging about providing houses to few hundred poor, must remember that the Congress had built 76,371 houses in GHMC limits under BSUP scheme, he said.
The list under UIG scheme include remodelling of storm water drainages, construction of flyovers, diversion of Krishna Water to Secunderabad, road widening of ORR and Inner Ring Road under Charminar Pedestrianisation Project, Rehabilitation and Strengthening of Sewerage system in Old City Area on South of Musi and several other projects.
Former Union Minister explained that he facilitated sanction of 1,422 luxury buses at a cost of Rs 473.30 crore for Hyderabad City exclusively through APSRTC in 2009. Besides this, as Information and Broadcasting Minister, he started International Children’s Film Festival with Hyderabad City as permanent venue.
As Union Culture Minister, he sanctioned Hyderabad City Science Centre at a cost of Rs 120 crores at Budvel village, abetting the ORR and a Multi State Cultural complex was also setup in Hyderabad city at Jubilee Hills.
While challenging the contribution of TRS and its leadership in development of the City, he asked the leadership to stop bragging and engage itself in development activities. He described the poll campaign by TRS as not more than propaganda to lure voters. “These leaders must stop making noises about development, rather they should focus on actual works,” he said.
