As the top ranked girl in the Under-nine age-group category, Sevitha Viju Mahadev is the toast of Telangana State, particularly of the chess fraternity. A remarkable feature of the fourth standard student of Sadhu Vaswani International School at Kompally is that she is endowed with the right match-temperament and a exceptionally high degree of consistency, which are helping her make all the winning moves in tournaments that matter.

Right now, she is readying for a bigger challenge and is hoping to prove her worth on the national firmament. Initiated into the mind-game by her father Venkat Mahadev, who presently doubles up as her immediate regular coach, Sevitha has had a tremendous run this season having already pocketed an impressive number of titles, including the U-ninne Girls Telangana State Chess Championship that was held in the second week of last month. She followed it up with another first in the Kasindhuni Rajya Laxmi Memorial International Fide-rating tournament that was organised in Hyderabad in the second fortnight of July.

Sevitha, with a pretty impressive rating of 1232, is coached online by Sembhu while veterans J Subrahmanyam and JRC Prasad work on the prodigious talent by playing practice matches. According to Subrahmanyam, who has seen her progress from the time she took to the 64 square Board, ‘Sevitha is naturally gifted and dedicated to the game. The better part is that she spends a lot of time practicing. With some more national outings, I am sure that she will go places.’

Her school principal, Pooja Ramchandani, is elated at the manner her student’s career is shaping up. She says that the school is proud of Sevitha not only because of her exploits but also because she is good at her academics, which she pursues with equal diligence. In fact, the school management deserves salutation because in a befitting gesture the girl is exempted from paying tuition fee! Sevitha won the Under-nine girl’s title in the inaugural East Godavari Trophy All India Below 1500 Fide Rating Chess Tournament that was organised at Rajahmundry in February.

In May, she added the Brilliant Trophy 1st Decade FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament at Brilliant Grammar High School, to her kitty. Another milestone was the Under-nine girl’s title triumph in the second Triple C All India FIDE Rating Open Chess Championship-2016 at Puri in April. Meanwhile, Sevitha, who turns 10 on September 26, is getting geared up to compete in the Under-9 Nationals slated to be held in Jalandhar from August 22 to 30. Manushri Deva is the only other player in Telangana State squad for the coveted event. ‘I will give my best to ensure that the prize comes to Telangana,’ says the confident-looking Sevitha Viju Mahadev.
