Voice of the art

Artist, Pallab Kanti Mitra’s painting exhibition was inaugurated at State Gallery of Art on Wednesday. Hailing from Kolkata, this is Pallab’s 17th solo exhibition. The exhibition was inaugurated by eminent art critic Jagdish Mittal and Dr K Lakshmi, director, State Gallery of Art.

On the occasion, Jagdish Mittal shared, “In spite of being a person with background of Chemistry, Pallab Mitra has worked continuously and pursued art. He has been constantly exhibiting his works at important centres in India. He has also worked on the technique of water colour painting, which is generally not an easy medium.”

Around 30 paintings are displayed in the show. According to Pallab, the works at the exhibition represent the protest against deforestation, chaos, destruction and the changing nature around us. Pallab says, “My works are mostly semi-abstract and my medium varies between oil, water colour, mixed media, pastels, wax, glass marker and even fevicol.

In my works I try to recompose fragmented thoughts and imagery into aesthetically meaningful pattersn generally using a palette of brilliant basic colors and I try to allow my poetic ideas to occupy my canvas.”

“My works delineate forms but at the last moment I decide to break it up, in a kind of mystery, which is exciting and emotionally charged. Most of my canvases appear like a riot of colours inviting the viewers to make subjective interpretations of the thoughts that give shape to the abstract form.

Chaos, death, destruction, bold protest against deforestation, colourful journey, the last journey, nature etc, reign supreme in my paintings. I try to work in an expressionist style and infuse a subtle feeling of romanticism. Picturing the river is an all knowing entity. I vent my creative urges also in art directly associated with social and environmental consciousness.
