Charminar: Turkish bath or Garam Hamam as it is called was once so popular that there used to be a long queue at the Government Nizamia General hospital. The therapy is as effective as it was in the past but due to negligence the Turkish bath is now a pale shadow of its former self.

Thousands of patients with paralysis, obesity, joint pains and spondylarthritis have found relief after taking treatment at the hospital and the heat treatment gives instant relief. Even today, old timers come to the hospital for a steam bath but are turned away as all of them cannot be accommodated.

Technically, the Garam Hamam is now under the Government Nizamia Tibbi College and the lack of funds is a major reason for the sorry state of affairs. Dr Parveen Sultana, superintendent, Government Nizamia General hospital said, “There is no doubt about the popularity of Garam Hamam but we need funds to bring it into shape. To refurnish the system, the hot water tub and wooden cot needs to be replaced.”

“The knowledge systems are in place. What we need is funds. Many people affected by paralysis get relief as we use medicated oils. “Guletesu, Gulebana and alekul malik herbs are mixed to boiling water. For certain problems poshe chilka and Maku too are used,” says Prof Mohammed Quadri of Nizamia Tibbi College.

On an average, 700 out patients visit the hospital and many need treatment at the Turkish bath. “The traditional medicine coupled with medicated oils help in recovery and in acute cases provides relief,” said a doctor.

An employee at the hospital on condition of anonymity said, “It is ironical that the heritage building was restored but the equipment inside the hospital is old.

The Unani hospital is popular in the old city and a great number belive in traditional medicine.”

Rihana,a resident of Moghulpura who was accompanied by her husband is suffering from joint pains said, “My father too had the same problem and he died at the age of 86 but he never took English medicine. The Unani hospital is the place that we all come to.”
