Vikarabad: The district is renowned for cultivation of pigeon pea red gram pulse. The pests that attack the crop like aphids and the withering away of the crop would no longer bother the farmers since the scientists have come out with a new variety of seed that is resistant to the common diseases.

The new seed will save at least Rs 5000 to Rs 6000 an acre for the farmer. Each time the farmer sprinkled the pesticide, he incurs Rs 2000 expenditure. Till the farmer harvested the crop, he has to spray the pesticide at least four or five times.

Keeping it in mind, Dr Sudhakar and Rejeswar Reddy, the scientists at the agriculture research station here developed RGT1 variety of seed that is resistant to these pests.
The discovery of the seed was the result of the more than one and half years of sustained research effort.

Earlier, the scientists developed RGT4 (Hanuma) variety of seed and achieved good results. In the latest research, the farmers invented white seed that is resistant to crop withering problem.

The newly developed seeds will ensure a yield of at least seven to eight quintals of red gram an acre.
