AS Rao Nagar: With thunderstorms striking the city on Wednesday night, several trees were uprooted and as a result the power lines were damaged leading to load shedding in several areas in the East Zone. The worst affected was Srinivasa Nagar where power was shut for more than seven hours.

A 11 kv electric pole fell as the soil became loose due to the ongoing drainage works, said electricity department officials. Compounding to the problem was the uprooted trees that fell on the electric wires leading to further damage.

GHMC electricity wing assistant engineer Chandrasekhar said, “Unlike the past, now electricity can be restored within a few hours as there is a new mechanism where the exact location of the transformer can be detected and power can be connected via a new line nearby.” He further added, “Power was restored after seven hours but earlier it would have taken longer time.”

Corporator Pavani Reddy along with GHMC officials inspected post rain works like removal of trees and electric poles. She said that due to the rains with gale, electric poles and trees fell down and power supply got interrupted in most of the colonies.
