South Central Railway Engineers Association, affiliated to All Indian Railway Engineers Federation (AIREF), staged a dharna in front of the Rail Nilayam on Thursday. They demanded a hike in wages of junior engineers and senior section engineers and prescription of timely promotions. Other demands included the recognition of the AIREF so that eighty thousand of its members can represent their grievances and awarding Group B status to all railway engineers.
A representation in this regard was submitted to Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. VBV Srinivasa Raju, general secretary of the union, said, “It is disappointing that even after 161 years of formation of railways and 67 years of independence, qualified engineers are considered as organised labour by virtue of the Trade Union Act 1926,which was imposed during the British era.”
