About 1,000 tax payers have to pay Rs 620 crore

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is going hammer and tongs in the property collection drive. All senior officers in the 18 circles are working extra time to see to it that defaulters pay up and are driving the field officers to go the extra mile. The corporation wants to beat its own record of collecting Rs 1,000 crore last year. The target for 2014-15 is Rs 1,500 crore.

A major chunk of the property tax amounting to Rs 620 crore has to be paid by 1,000 defaulters, with the highest being from the central zone. Rs 290.47 crore is to be collected from Circles 7, 8, 9 and 10. There are 13.65 lakh buildings in GHMC limits, of which 11.05 lakh are residential and the remaining are commercial.

S Harikrishna, additional commissioner (revenue), said, “Out of the 1,500 crore, Rs 1300 crore could be collected easily.” According to reliable sources, Rs 800 crore has already been collected. The civic body aims to collect Rs 124 crore from the north zone and Rs 92 crore from the east zone.

Andhra Bank to collect GHMC property taxes

The GHMC entered into a tie-up with Andhra Bank. Citizens can now pay a variety of taxes such as property, advertisement, trade license, and building permission fee through 192 branches of the bank. Earlier, GHMC used to collect its taxes through 537 branches of eight banks including SBH, HDFC, ING Vysya, Indus Hind, Kotak Mahindra, Yes Bank, Indian Bank. Taxes have also been collected through Mee Seva, Citizen Service Center and by bill collectors of the corporation, he said. With the new initiative, people could pay their taxes in 192 Andhra Bank branches, informed GHMC chief Somesh Kumar.
