A team of doctors, comprising Dr Girish Warrier, Dr Meena Trehan and Dr Kavitha Chintala, were felicitated by Sangita Reddy, joint managing director, Apollo Hospitals Group, on Friday at Apollo Health City. The paediatric cardiology team had achieved the rare milestone of performing a hundred fontan repairs with 98 per cent success rate for single ventricle defect, a complex congenital heart condition.
In India, 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with single ventricle defects. Single ventricle defects are complex heart diseases with very large holes in the heart and one of the lower chambers of the heart is often rudimentary. Such children would need multiple operations called fontan repairs to survive beyond a decade.
On the occasion, Ravi Krishnan, CEO and founder, Stepathlon, has come forward to support SACHi in its endeavour to provide succor to congenital heart disease kids hailing from economically challenged sections of the society. SACHi was started as a comprehensive programme to address all aspects of paediatric care, especially prevention, early detection, treatment, funding and follow up care.
